I very seriously doubt that Anaheim will move MacTavish.

He is a player on the rise as opposed to Nelson who is on the decline.

I think if they go with Coyle as the 2C, it’ll end up being as successful as it was when they tried Compher, Newhook, Johansson and Mittelstadt there. Boston tried it last season and we all saw how well it went for them. I would love it if it could work, because $5.25 for a 3C is nuts, even with the cap rising exponentially over the next few years. I honestly don’t know what the answer is, but aside from bringing Nelson back, there’s nobody from within who can be expected to excel in that spot.

I don’t think that he is. First, he was a primadonna asshole when he was here. Second, the initial split between he and the team was acrimonious, at best. And finally, the GM who was forced to trade him either because he forces way out or because the team was tired of his antics, is now president of hockey operations. There’s no world in which they bring him back.

I’ve read that Ottawa is looking to trade Pinto and that they’re in desperate need of a right-handed defenseman. And whilst he’s getting older and is somewhat injury prone, Manson has a ton of playoff experience and would be a would be a veteran voice to help guide their young core. The Avs would obviously have to throw in a pick and a decent prospect, at least, but I think Pinto is the most logical and most attainable of the 6. McTavish would be even better, but we simply don’t have the type of assets it would take to get Anaheim to part with him.

in that order.

Putting Danault at 2C might be asking a lot for a guy that had 8 goals last year and has only scored more than 20 once. Pinto or McTavish would be better long term and have much more upside. McTavish/Landy/Nuke would be an incredibly gritty & skilled line perfect for the playoffs.

One of the concerns for the more defensive minded centers is, will it be much of an upgrade over having Coyle be the 2C? That then begs the question of Coyle being the 2C and spending the money getting bigger on defense and a 3C. Preferably, the Avs need a 2C that will go to the net. The Avs currently play a perimeter game. They need to get someone who will try to get the tips and rebounds. They also need big guys on defense to stop the other teams from standing in front of the net uncontested. I look forward to the list of possible 3C’s if the Avs decide they cannot spend $6-8M on a 2C.

I believe it was a two part trade, with part one being Colton to New Jersey for a 2nd rounder, and part two being that 2nd rounder and Girard for Pinto. Do you think that would be enough?
Also, I’m sure there will be chatter (again) about McTavish’s teammate, Trevor Zegras. He had a nice bounce back season – and was perhaps the biggest reason Anaheim had a late playoff push – and he’s capable of playing center, so would he be a logical trade acquisition as well? As for the rest of the list: I could get behind Danault, but I’d rather get Pinto; Stephenson is going to be a no from me, and I mocked Seattle last year for giving him that ridiculous contract; O’Reilly is the dream, and I still love the idea of bringing him back; I don’t see Rossi or McTavish happening, solely due to the Mittelstadt experiment – I think the future 2C will be a two-way guy like Danault, Pinto, or O’Reilly.

I really like Stephenson if Seattle retains a bit of salary. He was pretty good in Washington and great in Vegas. As Aarif hypothetically suggested, if he were a UFA available this summer and the Avs could sign him to a 5×5 or 5×6?? No question they would/should.

I’d also really like Pinto but what’s the over/under on acquiring him? The jokes would just write themselves…
