You can trade for a UFA players rights. The purpose would be for the acquiring team to get an 8th year on the new contract (instead of just 7 on the open market), with the trading team recouping some resources for the departing player. It’s what Carolina did with Jake Guentzel last summer.

The problem is that Edmonton will never trade Draisaitl. If an impact player could be available, it would probably be in Toronto. Matthews will not be available. On the other hand, Nylander could be if Toronto were looking to sign Marner and Tavares for example. Or Marner and/or Tavares could be available on the free agent market.

The chances of Eichel being traded in the next few months are nil.
