2017 is the first year that BCU Racing has opened up the project to all courses of Birmingham City University.
Their key design ethos is to have a car with a low centre of gravity and low weight, focusing on weight management over outright power. Central to this is redesigning the monocoque in order to reduce its profile within the regulations, in particular by reducing the frontal area. The powertrain and driveline have been kept similar to the previous year in order to increase reliability and control the evolution of the design. This area has been optimised to simplify the design and reduce the weight. To overcome the challenges involved with designing the car, the team has utilised the past experience of the 2016 team to create a new breed of engineers as around 30% of the team is comprised of first year students. The team would like to thank lecturers and University support staff, as well as sponsors, for all their expertise and time. Particular mention goes to Shaw Sheet Metal for supporting the production of the team’s ribbed core aluminium monocoque.
