It sounds like some of the new CBA changes we’ve discussed all summer will come into play earlier than next September. And the Avalanche could take advantage of at least one of them.

NHL Insider Frank Seravalli reported on Tuesday that the NHL and the NHL Players’ Association have agreed to an implementation schedule for CBA changes.

The most notable of the bunch is the implementation of the new playoff salary cap system for the upcoming 2026 Stanley Cup playoffs. That means teams won’t be able to bury players on LTIR until April and then activate them in the postseason despite being above the salary cap.

How could the Avs take advantage of this? Simply by having cap flexibility.

The fact that the Avalanche currently have cap space flexibility already puts them at an advantage. And if that cap continues to grow and accrue over the course of the season, they’ll be able to utilize it to their advantage at the trade deadline.

Most importantly, they can take advantage of teams struggling to remain cap compliant. And I’m willing to wager that no team hates this early implementation of the playoff salary cap system more than the two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers.

Earlier in the summer, I wrote that Colorado should target Evan Rodrigues from the Panthers. He looks like the obvious odd man out if the team needs to trade someone to remain under the cap ceiling. But then rumors started to circulate that Matthew Tkachuk was going to start the season on LTIR, and that was all but confirmed in recent weeks.

The Panthers suddenly have time to decide what to do. They don’t have to trade Rodrigues or anyone else to get under the cap right away. But they’ll have to eventually.

They won’t be able to play the LTIR game all season. If someone else gets hurt when Tkachuk returns, they can kick the can further down the road, but they won’t be able to do that all the way until the playoffs start. The roster, as currently constructed, with everyone healthy, is not cap compliant, and won’t be able to all dress at the same time in the regular season or playoffs.

Should the Avs still target Rodrigues? We’ll have to wait and see. It depends on how Victor Olofsson looks on the third line and if they decide they need an upgrade. And after that, they’ll have to determine if Rodrigues at $3 million until 2027 is the best option.

But even if not him, or the Panthers, the Avalanche’s cap flexibility will allow them an opportunity to get someone from a cap strapped team before the playoffs.

The next advantage for the Avs is confirmation from Seravalli’s report that new contract structures will not take effect until Sept. 16, 2026.

You can click the article below for more on why this helps the Avalanche. But in short, Cale Makar can sign a new deal under the current rules after July 1, but before Sept. 16. And the same rules will apply for all free agents on July 1, including UFA Martin Necas and RFA Jack Drury.

JJ Peterka’s time in Buffalo has come to an end and he’s on his way to the Central Division. Speaking of the Central, the Minnesota Wild cleared more cap space and are looking to go big in free agency. Also, Jonathan Drouin is unlikely to return to Colorado. How about a reunion with a different depth winger?

All that and more on this edition of Deen’s Daily — June 26.

Colorado Hockey Now

As we inch closer to July 1, it’s becoming more clear that the Avalanche are likely moving on from Drouin. He has been a strong piece over the past two seasons, trailing only behind Nathan MacKinnon, Mikko Rantanen, and Cale Makar in points. But with Gabe Landeskog back, and Valeri Nichushkin playing, it’s hard to find a fit for the now 30-year-old Drouin.

The latest report below reiterates this thought. But it’s still worth noting that Drouin made it to July 1 last year before re-signing so I wouldn’t rule that out just yet. The Avs don’t currently have space to bring him back, but they might by the time Tuesday comes around.

The Florida Panthers, who are trying to bring back two (or maybe three) of Sam Bennett, Brad Marchand, and Aaron Ekblad, have to shed cap space. And there was a report that Evan Rodrigues might end up being a cap casualty. If that’s the case, would a reunion in Colorado make sense?

The Avs have Charlie Coyle at 3C and teams are expressing interest. But if Chris MacFarland resists trading him, then he might look at changing up the wingers Coyle plays with. Last year it was Ross Colton (for one game), Drouin, and Joel Kiviranta.

Methinks Rodrigues would be a good fit. Read more below.

Around The NHL

We’ve got a lot of rumors circulating ahead of tomorrow’s NHL Draft. I was going to include all of it here, but I felt that’s better suited as its own post later today. Keep an eye out for that!

Peterka Lands in Utah: One of the biggest dominos on the trade market landed in Utah late Wednesday night. In a trade that broke around midnight ET, the Buffalo Sabres traded disgruntled winger JJ Peterka to the Utah Mammoth for Josh Doan and Michael Kesselring. It’s somewhat of an underwhelming return but both of these players have the ability to really break out. If I’m a Sabres fan, I’m upset that a first-round pick (perhaps in 2026) wasn’t included in this trade.

Let’s hope the Sabres can figure things out and actually develop both of their new acquisitions. I have my doubts.

As for the Mammoth, Peterka signed a five-year deal worth $7.7 million, which makes him the second-highest paid player on the team behind last year’s big add, Mikhail Sergachev. These aren’t the Arizona Coyotes of yesteryear, that much we know for sure.

Minnesota Clears Space: The Wild are clearing more cap space ahead of July 1. They sent Freddy Gaudreau and his $2.1 million cap hit to the Seattle Kraken for a draft pick. Minnesota was rumored to be interested in Brock Nelson before he re-signed with Colorado. Could Brock Boeser be Bill Guerin’s next target?

84-Game Regular Season: Among the changes expected in the upcoming CBA, the NHL is reportedly expanding to 84 regular-season games starting in 2026-27. Pierre LeBrun of TSN and The Athletic also said it would mean that the preseason is shortened and the regular season would start in late September. I’ll write about the new CBA separately once the changes become official. But there’s some really interesting things coming after this season.

Kuznetsov’s Comeback: Evgeny Kuznetsov is looking to make an NHL comeback after one season in the KHL, according to his agent.

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: The Pens are picking No. 11 and No. 12 on Friday. They’re slated to have a big night.

Detroit Hockey Now: The Red Wings need talent up front and have assets to move. Why couldn’t they land Peterka?

Vegas Hockey Now: The Golden Knights are early favorites to land Mitch Marner. But first, they’ve signed extensions with both Reilly Smith and Brandon Saad.

Boston Hockey Now: Morgan Geekie had a spectacular breakout year with the Bruins in 2024-25. What’s the latest on his contract negotiations?

Evan Rodrigues is reportedly available for trade after a two-year stint with the Florida Panthers. The former Avs winger never wanted to leave Colorado following his one-year stint with the team in 2023, but it ended up being the best decision of his career.

The Panthers are back-to-back Stanley Cup champions, and Rodrigues, who signed a four-year deal with them two summers ago, was a key piece of their top six both times.

Now that Florida is up against the cap and pushing to bring back at least two of their big three free agents, the Avs should try to pry Rodrigues out of Florida to fill in as a depth forward. The now 31-year-old has chemistry with the core, has versatility to play on any line, and can provide an added veteran presence for a team itching to make another Stanley Cup run.

The Avs have a mostly complete forward group already, but the third line could use some help. Assuming Charlie Coyle sticks around, it’s looking more like one or both of his wingers from the postseason will be gone. The line ultimately wasn’t all that effective.

Both Jonathan Drouin and Joel Kiviranta are pending unrestricted free agents.

Ross Colton is currently slotted in as the third-line right-winger on the depth chart — a position he held before suffering an injury in Game 1 against Dallas. The left wing spot is Miles Wood, who only played one game in the playoffs. At least one, if not both, of those spots are up for grabs and Rodrigues for two more years at $3 million per would be a great add.

Wood should, and probably will, be shipped out in a cap dump deal of some sort. Once that’s taken care of, the team should still trade Colton and his $4 million salary and replace him with Rodrigues and another cheaper forward, perhaps even Kiviranta.

Colton is a luxury the team can’t afford anymore. In order for the Avs to remake their defense, they’ll need extra cap space. If you can find a way to trade Colton and Wood and replace them with Rodrigues for a million less than Colton and someone else, you’ll have the space you need to shuffle the blueline.

I’ve spent most of the offseason wondering if the team would bring back Drouin. He’s not the best fit on the third line, but he would give the team much-needed top-six security. However, I wrote yesterday about the issue with this logic. Drouin is a great fit on the top line when he’s healthy. He has great chemistry with Nathan MacKinnon. We know this.

But his playoff performance in a depth role left a lot to be desired.

Read More: Report: Jonathan Drouin ‘Very Unlikely’ To Return To Colorado

You can’t re-sign him for top-six security if he’s not going to get the job done in his more permanent third-line role.

Rodrigues would be a much better fit. We know versatility is one of his strengths, and we’ve seen him produce with MacKinnon before.

When he spent a year in Colorado, he had 39 points in 69 games and played a career-high 17:51 per game. In the playoffs, Rodrigues had five points in seven games, playing mostly with MacKinnon and the now departed Mikko Rantanen. But more importantly, he’d be an excellent third liner that can both provide energy and produce offensively.

That’s the type of top-six security the Avs need.

I’m not sure what it would take to get him out of Florida but given the deals we’ve seen for Mason Marchment and Evander Kane, I wouldn’t expect it to be much. The biggest hurdle for the Avs would be clearing space for him. Whether it’s Wood, Colton, or both, those would be the guys to trade to make this happen.

Rodrigues had 15 points in 21 games in this most recent Cup run, after recording 15 in 24 in 2024.

I remember speaking to Rodrigues in the dressing room after the Game 7 loss to Seattle. He was very open and honest about wanting to stay in Colorado. But the Avs decided to look elsewhere, and revamped their forward group with the likes of Colton, Wood, Drouin, and Ryan Johansen, among others.

That same night, I tried to ask J.T. Compher about his pending unrestricted free agent status, but he avoided the question.

Rodrigues liked it here, and I don’t have any reason to believe he wouldn’t want to come back. If you’re the Panthers and you have to move him to clear space, sending him to the Western Conference should be your priority.

The Avalanche are in Sunrise, Florida to face off against the reigning Stanley Cup Champion Panthers. Puck drop is scheduled for 4:08 p.m. MT at Ameranrt Bank Arena.

Colorado is coming off two consecutive road wins, while Florida has dropped four of its last five. This is the first of two meetings between the teams this season. The Cats beat the Avs in both games last season.

Head coach Jared Bednar has been moving wingers around the top two lines since Valeri Nichushkin and Jonathan Drouin returned to the lineup. No one combination has stood out so he’ll continue to shift players around until that chemistry forms organically.

Guerilla Sports’ Jesse Montano said the Avs’ lineup did not look to have changed from the last game at the team’s morning skate at the Panthers’ practice facility in Fort Lauderdale.

Panthers head coach Paul Maurice is mixing up his lineup. According to the team’s senior digital content manager, former Avalanche forward Evan Rodrigues will face his old teammates on the wing of the Panthers’ top line in South Florida.

Alexandar Georgiev is the expected starter and has won each of his last four starts, earning a save percentage of .914 and a goals-against average of 2.22.

Various members of the Florida Panthers have had their day with the Stanley Cup, and on Friday, it was Evan Rodrigues’ turn. The former Avalanche forward who has finally found a long-term home in the NHL out in Florida was huge for the Panthers in the Final, and took the Cup back to Boston University.

It’s the time of the year where we start getting Top 10 rankings, which means everyone is slowly getting ready for another NHL season. The NHL Network put together their list, and it’s full of Russians.

He had some nice things to say about the Calgary Flames and how they treated him, but it’s time for a new adventure for Oliver Kylington. If his words are to be believed, the Avalanche really wanted him.

He’s likely to have a far bigger impact on the Eagles than the Avalanche, but Colorado signed one of the better scorers in the AHL on Friday in Matthew Phillips.

News And Rumors

NHL.com: He was pretty darn important for the Florida Panthers in the Stanley Cup Final, and he got his day with the Cup yesterday. Letting Evan Rodrigues walk with the contract he signed looks like a mistake to me, but he’s in a pretty good situation right now.

NHL Network: The Top 10 goalies list for next season doesn’t look all that different than the one we got last year, although I do think it’s a little controversial to go Igor Shesterkin over Connor Hellebuyck.

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: After how things worked out with the Avalanche, I never expected to see another NHL team thinking they could get a second round pick for Lars Eller again.

San Jose Hockey Now: Who is Macklin Celebrini a hybrid of? Colby Cohen thinks Sidney Crosby and Jonathan Toews.

Detroit Hockey Now: The Red Wings had a perplexing summer, and they still haven’t even signed Lucas Raymond and Moritz Seider.

New Jersey Hockey Now: It seems like everything went wrong for New Jersey last year. Here’s everything that must go right for the Devils.

Stop me if you’ve heard me say this before – the Colorado Avalanche might have really missed out by letting Evan Rodrigues go. The 30 year old forward, who left the Avalanche to sign with the Florida Panthers last summer, appears to have made the right decision for himself, as he’s now a Stanley Cup champion.

He’s not the only person in that Panthers organization with ties to the Avalanche either.

Of course, I’ve written a lot about Rodrigues over the last few weeks. Before the Stanley Cup Final started, I said he was the one that got away from Colorado, as his ability to play anywhere in the top nine would have been extremely useful last season and moving forward. Rodrigues made me look pretty good, as he was arguably Florida’s most consistent forward against the Edmonton Oilers. He finished the playoffs with 15 points in 24 games, but seven of those points came in the Stanley Cup Final. Saving the best for last, I guess. He’s always been a streaky guy, so I guess he chose the right time to get hot.

Rodrigues was a pleasure to speak to when he was in Colorado, and I’m always happy when nice guys come out on top. Plus, his first name isn’t so bad either.

The other connection to the Avalanche on the Panthers comes from their coaching staff. Remember Sylvain Lefebvre? A valuable defensive defenseman on the 1996 Cup winning team in Colorado, he also spent a few years behind the bench as Joe Sacco’s assistant from 2009-2012. He just so happens to be one of the assistant coaches in Florida, and is in charge of running their defense. That defense managed to do just enough to slow down Connor McDavid in Games Six and Seven, and that’s why they’re world champions right now.

Congratulations to both Rodrigues and Lefebvre on winning the Stanley Cup. Now, onto the off-season, where the Avalanche and every other team in the league try to dethrone the Panthers.

We see it every single year. When the Stanley Cup Final rolls around, it’s not always the superstars that play the role of hero, but rather the role players throughout the lineups that get the job done. Andre Burakovsky was the hero for the Avalanche back in Game One in 2022, and through two games this year, it’s an old friend getting the job done for the Florida Panthers.

Evan Rodrigues, who left as a free agent over the summer, has three of the seven goals the Panthers have scored in the Stanley Cup Final. In Game One, he scored the all-important insurance goal in the second period after the Oilers left him all alone in the slot. In Game Two, he played an even bigger role.

Three minutes into the third period, Rodrigues was handed the puck by Evan Bouchard of the Oilers. I know us Evan’s have to stick together, but that’s not what I had in mind. Rodrigues stepped into his shot and beat Stuart Skinner high on the short side, giving the Panthers the lead. About 10 minutes later, after Leon Draisaitl took Sasha Barkov out of the game with a questionable high hit, Rodrigues delivered again, tipping in a pass near the front of the net to give the Panthers the two goal lead. Florida went on to win 4-1 and has a stranglehold on the series.

“It’s special,” Rodrigues said to Florida Hockey Now. “I’m just trying to embrace it and stay in the moment. It’s two big wins for our team and I think we’ve already turned the page and we’re getting ready for Game 3.”

Like I said, it’s not always the stars that get the job done in the Stanley Cup Final. Connor McDavid has zero goals. Leon Draisaitl has a pretty dirty hit under his belt, but zero goals and zero points. Even Matthew Tkachuk has been quiet, and hasn’t picked up a point in four games. Guys like Rodrigues are important. He’s a streaky guy, and Avalanche fans know that, but when he gets hot, he really gets hot.

Last season, he had some long slumps, followed by some hot streaks. That’s been the case for his entire career. I’m sure he’ll cool down again, but inside of a series, a small hot streak can make a huge difference to any team. Even when he’s not scoring, Rodrigues is a valuable player. He can play on any line, helps drive possession, and can be trusted at any moment inside of a game. Did you notice who got moved to the top line in the third period to give the team a spark? That would be E-Rod.

I’ve already belabored the fact that I think the Avalanche lost a good one here, so I won’t keep going down that road, but Rodrigues is a great guy. He was always willing to talk, and his teammates loved him. I’m sure a lot of them are rooting for him to get the job done.

Now, he’s just two wins away from a Stanley Cup ring.

With the Stanley Cup Final not starting until Saturday, NHL teams are sitting around doing nothing. If the series goes the full seven games, teams won’t have much time to do anything between the time the Cup is handed out and the NHL Draft, where a lot of business goes down. That means teams might be using the next few days to get some business done, and one insider believes at least one big trade could go down.

We got some news late on Monday night that the Avalanche and Jonathan Drouin’s camp will likely be meeting this week. That doesn’t mean a deal is close, but it’s a good sign.

All that and more in this Tuesday edition of Evan’s Daily.

Colorado Hockey Now

You need a lot more than big guns to win in the NHL, but the Oilers and Panthers meeting in the Final is a sign that you can still win with some high paid players.

He’s not a big name player, but the Avalanche sure could use a guy like Evan Rodrigues right now.

Some news (sort of), as Chris MacFarland is expected to meet with the agent of Jonathan Drouin this week.

CHN

Big Move Coming?

Every NHL team other than the two in the Final are sitting around doing nothing, so why not make a trade this week? According to Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff, that might just happen.

“I wouldn’t be shocked to see him moved by Saturday,” Seravalli said on his podcast.

Who is he talking about? Martin Necas of the Carolina Hurricanes, who a lot of teams would love to get their hands on. Three teams he specifically mentioned that were interested were Vancouver, Calgary, and Columbus.

Necas took a step back this year with 53 points after scoring 71 last year, but he’s still a really talented player, one who picked up a Hat Trick against the Avalanche earlier this season. The big reason why Carolina would want to get this done early is because they have other business they want to take care of, like re-signing Jake Guentzel before he hits the open market. Sounds like that’s unlikely to happen.

We’ll see if business picks up this week.

Utah Logo

The NHL team in Utah won’t have an official name for a while, but it sounds like they’re inching closer to a logo for their inaugural season.

I’ll be honest, I really don’t care much about this one. It’s only for one season, and I’m not quite sure why they can’t just pick out an official name right now, but it is what it is. I’m not a logo guy, so which ones do you all like, if any?

Every summer, a GM has to make tough decisions when it comes to building their roster. Chris MacFarland certainly has his hands full with the Avalanche this offseason, handcuffed by the Gabriel Landeskog and Valeri Nichushkin situations.

Last summer, the Avalanche had some clarity as far as what they could do heading into the offseason, and made plenty of changes. One of those changes was letting Evan Rodrigues go in free agency. Whether it was due to his contract demands or the Avalanche looking for a change, Rodrigues left and signed an extremely reasonable contract with the Florida Panthers, where he sits just four games away from a Stanley Cup.

And right now, he kind of feels like the one that got away for Colorado.

“He can basically do it all,” Sasha Barkov told Florida Hockey Now. “He can play defense really well, he plays offense really well, he takes face-offs, you can put him in any situation on the ice. Off the ice, he’s a great guy. He can hang out with anyone and be a great guy with anyone, so that’s a really good thing to have as a person and I’m really impressed by him ever since Day 1.”

None of this should come as a surprise to Colorado fans. That’s who Rodrigues was for them last year. Sure, he was inconsistent offensively, and that’s probably why he didn’t get a bigger contract over the summer, but he was someone you could slot in on any line and feel comfortable with what he would provide. He’s adaptable to any role a coaching staff gives him. That’s extremely valuable in this league.

At practice, he was Nathan MacKinnon‘s running mate, doing a lot of the same things Jonathan Drouin did with the Avalanche superstar this year. He’d get on early with MacKinnon and they’d both stay on the ice late, working on various things. In games, the two had chemistry, working off each other really well. The fit was there on the ice and in the locker room, but Colorado ultimately went another direction.

Rodrigues signed a four year deal with the Panthers on July 2 for just $12 million, giving him a $3 million cap hit. There’s no telling if he would have taken that deal in Colorado, but I imagine he was looking for some term after what happened to him the prior summer. Florida has no state taxes, so players take home a bit more of what they earn, and given he signed that deal on the second day of free agency, the big offers probably weren’t there on day one.

Just looking at the contracts signed in free agency by the Avalanche, it seems like most of the money Rodrigues got went to Miles Wood. I thought Wood had a fine first year in Colorado, excelling on the penalty kill, but he’s a pretty clear bottom six forward. Would Colorado have been in a better off forking over a little more money to keep the versatile Rodrigues? That’s tough to say because sacrifices would have had to have been made elsewhere, but every single statistic would indicate Rodrigues is the more effective player.

Like he did in Colorado, Rodrigues has excelled with multiple linemates on the Panthers. He started the year with Barkov on the top line, spent time on the third line with Anton Lundell, and is currently on their second line with Matthew Tkachuk. That sort of versatility is crucial if you want to win in this league, and certainly could have helped the Avalanche this season.

It’s in the past, and there’s nothing you can do about it right now, but it definitely feels like Rodrigues is the one who got away from the Avalanche.

The Panthers are benefiting because of it.

Is it any surprise that the Florida Panthers are headed back to the Stanley Cup Final? No, not at all. They’ve been a wagon all year long and were probably the most impressive team the Colorado Avalanche faced this year in the NHL. On Saturday, they booked their ticket to another Final, and if not for Igor Shesterkin, the series probably would have been over a lot sooner.

Over the last few days, we’ve taken a look at some free agents that might make sense for the Avalanche. They’ll need to find free agents because they haven’t been hitting on their draft picks. On Saturday, they let two more walk, although neither are really game breakers.

All that and more int his Sunday edition of Evan’s Daily.

Colorado Hockey Now

On Friday, we took a look at eight UFA forwards that could make sense for the Avalanche. On Saturday, it was time to take a peak at the defensemen. No big names, but players that can add depth to the organization.

Even though he was acquired just a few months back, he won’t be a member of the Avalanche organization, as Graham Sward was not signed prior to the deadline on Saturday for Colorado to retain his rights.

Panthers Book Their Ticket

The Rangers might have had the best record in the NHL during the regular season, but the Panthers were always the best team in the NHL. They proved that in the Conference Finals. The only reason the series went six games was because of New York’s elite goaltender, but he didn’t get a whole lot of help.

Florida just has a little bit of everything. They can score, they can defend, they’re deep, and they’re nasty. Really nasty. If they want to win it all, it might have to happen this year, because half their team seems like they’re headed towards free agency. I think they’ll pull it off, too.

Also, since they won the game, Evan Rodrigues has to buy this linesman a beer. Oof.

Speaking of Rodrigues, is he kind of the one that got away? More on that in the coming days.
