Imperial Racing Green’s (IRG) current EV2 team is the first truly multi-disciplinary Formula Student group for Imperial College London, drawing on expertise from the Mechanical, Electrical and Aeronautical Engineering departments.
The car, EV2, is a student managed project looking to build upon the success of winning the Class 2 event in 2013. EV2 had been developed over three years under the philosophy of ‘Simplicity is King, Reliability is Queen’. Proven legacy components and designs from previous IRG vehicles have been built upon and combined using established, engineering practice. The aim is to produce a car that performs not only wheel, but with reliability and in-line with predictions. As a result of this philosophy EV2 has a steel space frame chassis, surrounded by carbon-fibre bodywork, sporting a battery electric power train. The 21MJ lithium-ion battery pack, located under the driver’s legs, powers a single 3-phase motor through a motor controller. Drive is transmitted to the rear wheels via a single-gear drive and a mechanical differential, which has been developed from legacy designs. All of the control electronics are housed in a separate container resulting in a clear, well organised wiring structure.
