August is over, September is here, and hockey is not far away. Also, the Habs might finally trade a big contract and the Pens could be the one absorbing it.

All that and more on this edition of Deen’s Daily — September 2.

Colorado Hockey Now

I haven’t done it often over the summer, but I took the day off yesterday to get one last hurrah before the madness begins. We’re still right around two weeks away from the real start of everything but the end of August has always been somewhat of a ending to the offseason. We should expect things to take off from here.

As for the Avs, they’re hosting a rookie tournament at the South Suburban Sports Complex in 10 days. Media day follows after that, and then training camp begins on Sept. 18 — two weeks from Thursday.

I’m going to up the coverage here in the next few days with season previews for individual players. It’s an exciting time.

Around The NHL

Montreal Hockey Now: Now that the Habs have paid out the final big lump sum of bonus money to Carey Price, we’ll likely see him traded in the near future to clear cap space off their books. Montreal is roughly $5 million above the cap and could start the season with Price on LTIR to clear the space. But if you have an opportunity to not use LTIR, and have cap flexibility instead, you’re better off. What will they pay to get it done?

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: It sounds like this could be a big week for the Pens. Fenway Sports Group might be selling the team to a new ownership here soon. And on the ice, the Penguins still have Erik Karlsson, Bryan Rust, and Rickard Rakell all as hot commodities on the trade market. Can they be the team to acquire Price to obtain draft assets?

Detroit Hockey Now: What if the Pens decide to deal one or two of those trade assets? The Red Wings are a likely landing spot for them. Can Steve Yzerman pull it off? Also, Dylan Larkin is climbing the games played list in Detroit, and he might be one of the best players without Stanley Cup success in franchise history. Can he shake off that label?

Speaking of Red Wings captains, Nick Lidstrom might find his way back in the organization soon.

Philly Hockey Now: What are you most excited for with the Flyers this season? For me, it’s the addition of Rick Tocchet as head coach after the John Tortorella era. And what Tocchet could do for Matvei Michkov and Trevor Zegras, among others.

New Jersey Hockey Now: Where the Devils rank for under 23 players.

I am back on the Avalanche beat and loving it even more. The last few days in Columbus and then dropping right into practice and a game left me a little drained but…. totally worth it. My little guy had a lot of firsts on the trip like his first plane ride, first NHL game, and his first face painting. I got to meet a lot of my wife’s family that I had never met, so that was a blast. A lot of them are Avalanche fans!!!!! Dater will be going on the road for you all to New York and New Jersey. So look for some stuff from him on the road there! Now for some news around the league: Phil Kessel is breaking records tonight and more.

  • Vegas Hockey Now: Phil Kessel will tie the Iron Man streak of 989 consecutive games played on Monday.
  • Philly Hockey Now: Even while winning, Coach Tortorella is benching the stars on the team.
  • Colorado Hockey Now: Dater kind of liked that Nichushkin goal against Vegas the other day.
  • Boston Hockey Now: Nick Foligno silences his critics

  • Florida Hockey Now: Eric Staal signs with the Florida Panthers.
  • Dallas Hockey Now: The Stars are off to their best start since 2006.

Monday morning – never my favorite. Maybe not your favorite thing ever either. We enter the final week of August. This summer has gone fast. But that means hockey is getting closer. Let’s do some NHL notes, starting with the breakfast Bo Byram had the other day literally in the Stanley Cup:

  • That’s at least the second food item to have been consumed from the bowl of the Cup so far this summer. Jack Johnson’s kids ate ice cream from it earlier.
  • Nathan MacKinnon visited some veterans with the Cup yesterday too, a day after his parade in Halifax.

  • More bad news regarding Carey Price and the Montreal Canadiens. Real bad (Montreal Hockey Now)
  • Calgary native Cale Makar reached out to Nazem Kadri to offer any tips, insights, advice on his city (Calgary Hockey Now)
  • The Bruins and David Pastrnak haven’t talked in a good while. No doubt “Pasta” saw the digits splashed around this summer on Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew Tkachuk. But the winger doesn’t seem worried about a deal with the Boston Bruins.
  • It’s possible the career of Nicklas Backstrom in Washington is over (Washington Hockey Now)
  • Stefen Rosner on the New York Islanders’ fairly miserable summer so far (NYI Hockey Now)
  • I had coffee with Jake Schroeder yesterday. I can report he’s doing well and doing a lot of work for his non-profit, and spent a good amount of time in France recently.
  • Happy retirement to Charlotte Grahame. She worked in Avalanche administration and the front office from Day 1. She did a lot of great things for the Avalanche in her time there.
  • Sean Monahan’s legacy in Calgary was bigger than one might think (Calgary Hockey Now)
  • The top 10 remaining UFAs after the Kadri signing (Hockey News)
  • Examining Team USA’s goaltending as the Women’s Worlds start (TSN)

The NHL trade deadline is a week away, so of course, there are going to be rumors, rumors, rumors.

Hey, I’m not judging here. I’ve put out my share of rumors, most of which died a sad, lonely death when it came to coming to fruition.

But there is one “hot” rumor out there that I must dispel.

Because Montreal Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin and top hockey operations exec Scott Mellanby are reportedly attending the Avalanche-Lightning game tonight, there have been no shortage of subsequent theories as to why they might be here. It probably didn’t hurt the rumor mill from churning extra-hard because of the Avalanche currently having its top goalie on the shelf with a lower-body injury.

On Twitter tonight, NHL Network analyst Mike Kelly got everybody excited with these tweets:

https://twitter.com/MikeKellyNHL/status/1229533308297584640

Hey man, I love a blockbuster as much as the next reporter. Covering the Avalanche for 25 years now? I have had my share, and they are always fun.

But this trade, this proposed/theorized trade involving Carey Price and some of the Avalanche’s best young prospects?

No, not happening. Not in a million years. You can take it to the bank that this trade will not happen. I’ll bet my entire life savings on it. OK, so that isn’t a whole lot, but I’ll still bet it. I’m not just saying this without doing a little checking up on it, either. There is not a chance in Hades that the Avalanche are going to acquire a goalie in his 30s with a $10.5 million cap hit for this and the following SIX YEARS, in exchange for really good young players. Not. Happening.

On to the next rumor…
