The Avalanche added an older prospect to their pipeline on Monday, signing 23-year-old defenseman Alex Gagne to a two-year, entry-level contract.

Gagne was originally drafted in the sixth round of the 2021 NHL Draft by the Tampa Bay Lightning. He became an unrestricted free agent on August 15 after four years of college.

The native of Bedford, N.H. spent four seasons at the University of New Hampshire, compiling seven goals and 41 assists in 139 collegiate games. In his senior year, Gagne served as captain for the second season in a row and posted a career high with four goals, 13 assists, and 17 points.

Listed as 6’5, 225 lbs, Gagne became the first of the new wave of college free agents to land an NHL contract.
