Brent Burns and Gabe Landeskog are becoming staples of the Avalanche’s informal skates at Ball Arena. But so are a handful of AHL guys looking to make an impression at training camp. Guys like Nikita Prishchepov, Maros Jedlicka, Matthew Stienburg, Chase Bradley, Sean Behrens, Gavin Brindley and many more.

I suspect we’ll see a ton more veterans trickle into town soon. Things are kicking off in less than three weeks.

Marner Chats with Mark Masters: Mitch Marner say down with TSN’s Mark Masters at the Hockey Canada orientation camp to discuss what ended up being a sad ending for the local kid from his hometown Toronto Maple Leafs. Among the things Marner talked about was how safety started becoming an issue. Someone in the city posted his address online following the Game 7 loss and Marner had to spend his last few weeks at home under heavy security. You can read more about his interview here. Pretty crazy stuff.

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Connor McDavid is the best hockey player in the world, but he’s not captain Canada. Not while Sidney Crosby is still around. Even at the age of 38.

Detroit Hockey Now: One of Detroit’s former highly touted prospects is facing a four-year doping ban from the IIHF after testing positive for a whopping six banned substances.

Boston Hockey Now: Can the Bruins be a landing spot for McDavid if he actually tests the market next summer? I still believe he’ll stay in Edmonton and probably sign soon. And even if not, it’s hard to imagine Boston would be his top choice.

The Avs made their final coaching hire for the upcoming season. Also, the latest Avalanche Mailbag had questions about the team’s upcoming 30th anniversary and how it should be celebrated.

All that and more on this edition of Deen’s Daily — August 7.

Colorado Hockey Now

There was more news than usual on Wednesday, in the sense that a hockey team did literally anything. While most of the league is quiet, the Avalanche finalized their coaching staff for the upcoming season.

Mark Popovic, a former NHL defenseman who has called Colorado home since retiring from pro hockey in 2017, has been added to Jared Bednar’s staff as the skills coach.

Read more about him below.

Also, in the second half of the August Mailbag, I touched on all sorts of things. There were questions about Bednar and Chris MacFarland feeling the pressure, the possibility of trying to target another Bruins centerman on the trade market, PTOs, and the team’s 30th anniversary.

I listed some of the ideas I’d like to see from the team during the season, as they celebrate 30 years in Colorado.

All that and more on this edition of Deen’s Daily — August 1.

Colorado Hockey Now

While we await news on which players the Avs will have at training camp (including perhaps another signing or two, or some professional tryouts), we did get word on Hockey Canada’s orientation camp.

The NHL is sending players to the Winter Olympics for the first time since 2014 and three of the Avs’ best are likely going to represent Canada. Injuries aside, probably nothing will keep Nathan MacKinnon, Cale Makar, or Devon Toews off of that roster. And Hockey Canada announced on Friday that all three of them will be part of the orientation camp later this month.

You can read more on that, plus see the full list of invites below.

Also, in case you missed it, I tracked down three storylines that are more under the radar for the upcoming Avalanche season. Read that below.

Going back to MacKinnon, the Avalanche’s star centerman spent a day celebrating Brad Marchand’s Stanley Cup championship. Marchand, who won the Cup with Florida, hosted both MacKinnon and fellow Nova Scotian Sidney Crosby at his Stanley Cup party. The trio have a combined six Cups between them.

I’m sure MacKinnon would like to become a multi-Cup champ like the other two soon.

Around The NHL

San Jose Hockey Now: Earlier that morning, Crosby and MacKinnon went for a skate with Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith. It’s safe to say the young San Jose duo was humbled quite a bit. That had to be an epic experience for those guys.

For Celebrini, his invitation to the Hockey Canada orientation camp is the first step towards a hopeful Olympics roster spot at the ripe young age of 19 years old.

Florida Hockey Now: Our folks at FHN had more on Marchand’s entire day with the Cup.

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Everything you need on the Pens rebuild, prospect rankings, and more.

Detroit Hockey Now: I’m a firm believer that the Red Wings need to keep roster spots open for young prospects to get a long look. Enough with the Andrew Copp, J.T. Compher, Justin Holl, and Erik Gustafsson type of signings. Carter Mazur is ready to prove he should be on the roster.

Montreal Hockey Now: the Habs will have three participants at the Hockey Canada camp. Only one was on the roster at the 4 Nations Face-Off.

Another week without any notable additions to the Avalanche’s roster. What gives? Also, Jaroslav Halak’s career is over, and the Penguins are again dealing with Sidney Crosby chatter.

All that and more on this edition of Deen’s Daily — July 18.

Colorado Hockey Now

We’ve completed another week with no real movement for the Avalanche. This summer is becoming harder to predict, but I do think they have at least two more notable moves in them. Even if they don’t come until August or September, like when they added Evan Rodrigues and Tomas Tatar in past years.

And by notable, I mean even a signing like Brett Leason or Victor Olofsson is notable in my books. The Avs have a strong top six already. They’ve got six NHL capable defensemen under contract, albeit the fit might not be best for that group. Unless they trade someone off the roster, they really don’t need to add much more than two bottom six guys to start the season and then go from there. That’s when the mid-season trade market can start to figure other things out.

Anyway, here’s a round up of everything I’ve written this week to catch you up. I’ll have more coming this afternoon, starting with a goaltending piece, before writing about the team’s current depth chart, and more, in the coming days.

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Two new trade targets have emerged for the Penguins, both names that I wrote about yesterday. Also, we’ve got more chatter around the hockey world about Sidney Crosby, even though he’s not yet given anyone a reason to discuss his move out of Pittsburgh. Dan Kingerski covers all of that in this Friday story.

Boston Hockey Now: Jaroslav Halak announced his retirement on Friday. He was drafted 22 years ago and had one heck of a run, which included a stop in Boston.

Detroit Hockey Now: J. Bednar the goalie. Not Jared, but Jan. The Red Wings prospect is thankful for how the organization has treated him and still has hopes of living out his NHL dream.

He’s got many, many reasons why he should stick it out. The Halak retirement should serve as motivation. We all remember 2010, when the goalie of the future, Carey Price, was beat out by Halak for the starting position in Montreal. Halak was drafted in the ninth round, No. 271 overall two years before Price went No. 5. Goalies are voodoo, you truly never know what you’re going to get. In this case, Halak went on to have a lengthy NHL career with several starting jobs as well.

Vegas Hockey Now: Are the Golden Knights done making moves in the offseason? Here’s what their depth chart looks like right now, after acquiring Mitch Marner and losing a stalwart like Alex Pietrangelo all in the same summer.

We have more trade activity on Day 2 of the NHL Draft and potentially a massive deal on the way. The Avalanche also made their first selection. During the first round, rumors circulated around Sidney Crosby again and Nathan MacKinnon has had enough.

All that and more on this edition of Deen’s Daily — June 28.

Colorado Hockey Now

The decentralized draft means the Avs’ front office is set up in the locker room at Ball Arena. I and other local media were invited to come watch the draft from the rink, and general manager Chris MacFarland met with us to specifically talk about the trade that sent Charlie Coyle and Miles Wood to Columbus.

He’ll meet with us again at the conclusion of Day 2 to talk about everything else.

Read More: Avs Still Have Work to Do After Coyle, Wood, and Brindley Trade

MacFarland mentioned something about goaltending being the only position that’s figured out so far. I expect quite a bit of movement on the blueline and in the bottom six. Should be a fun few days ahead.

Here are my thoughts on the deal, and what should come next.

Read More: Deen’s View: With Coyle and Wood Gone, Avalanche’s Main Focus Should Shift to Defense (+)

The Avs have made two selections in the draft through the first four rounds. They took overage defenseman Francesco Dell’Elce No. 77 overall before selecting another blueliner, Linus Funck (what a name), at No. 118. The only remaining pick they have is in the seventh round (assuming they don’t trade for another pick).

And now for the funny stuff. There were some pretty ridiculous rumors flying around about Sidney Crosby again. My general rule of thumb is, unless they’re coming from the main insiders, it’s probably not going to happen. Especially with a name as highly regarded as Crosby.

Anyway, there’s been some chatter online that MacKinnon and Crosby were together when Kevin Weekes tiptoed around the idea on live television during the draft. After Spittin’ Chiclets posted it on Instagram, MacKinnon responded, “fake news.”

The Avalanche’s top star has had enough.

Around The NHL

Marner to Vegas?! — This is so fresh that we don’t have an article on Vegas Hockey Now yet. Hannah Kreh is our wonderful writer covering the Golden Knights and she’ll be all over this in no time. Anyway, Elliotte Friedman and Darren Dreger are both reporting that Vegas is working on a sign and trade for Mitch Marner from the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The deal would involve center Nicolas Roy, who is signed for two more years carrying a $3 million AAV. Honestly, that would be a great get for the Leafs. They were going to lose Marner for nothing and instead would fill a massive need on the third line and fill out their center depth with Auston Matthews, John Tavares, and Scott Laughton.

Roy was a guy I was hoping the Avs could get after trading Coyle. It just doesn’t seem likely that Vegas would want to make a deal with Colorado.

Detroit Hockey Now: The Red Wings made the biggest move of the day (so far), acquiring goalie John Gibson from Anaheim. It’s actually a pretty solid trade for the Wings and a worthwhile risk for a player that has had quite a few injuries struggles in recent years.

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: The Pens swapped defensemen with the Buffalo Sabres and acquired a second-round draft pick in the process.

Florida Hockey Now: Sam Bennett wants to be part of a dynasty in Florida. That’s why he locked up a max-term deal on Friday.

We’re right in the midst of the dead part of the Avs’ offseason. But things will ramp up quickly as the playoffs continue.

Game 6 — Winnipeg Jets at Dallas Stars: The Stars have won every home game in the postseason since the opening loss to the Colorado Avalanche. They protected home ice in Games 2, 5, and 7 the rest of the way. In Round 2, they won one on the road again and capitalized on all three home Games: 3, 4, and 6.

With yesterday’s 2-1 OT victory, they’re on their way to the Western Conference Final for the third consecutive season. Meanwhile, Pete DeBoer is heading to the third round in the West for the sixth time in seven seasons. He led San Jose to the WCF in 2019 before losing to St. Louis. The following two years, DeBoer coached Vegas to the third round and lost to Dallas and Montreal, who went on to fall to the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Stanley Cup Final.

He was out of the picture in 2022 before again reaching the WCF in 2023, 2024, and 2025 with the Stars. He has yet to compete for the Stanley Cup in any of these seasons. Will this be the year?

Also, I do want to share my respect for Mark Scheifele. His father passed away in the middle of the night right before Game 7. It was sudden. Scheifele, who wears the ‘C’ as the Jets’ captain, ended up playing and scoring the only goal for Winnipeg. He was in the box in OT when the Stars won the series. Seeing the respect he got in the handshake line was truly special. Thoughts to him and his family.

Also, special shout-out to Stars fans for raising more than $30,000 to the Winnipeg Jets’ charitable foundation in memory of Scheifele’s father. After the sudden passing, word got out that Dallas fans were donating $55 for No. 55. Safe to say the word spread far and wide in the matter of hours.

Game 3 — Carolina Hurricanes at Washington Capitals: Bless the Hurricanes for sticking to their game. They shut out the Washington Capitals 4-0 to take Game 3 in what has been the least entertaining series of the postseason to date.

They got the game-tying goal with just over three minutes left in regulation. But they couldn’t get it to OT. In perhaps the most exciting ending of the playoffs to date, Reilly Smith scored with 0.4 seconds left to stun the Edmonton crowd. Vegas won 4-3 to get back in the series.

Colorado Hockey Now

It’s been nearly a week since Game 7, and I gotta say, I already miss it.

I’m not sure how long it’ll take until most of Avs faithful will stop feeling the sting from the loss, but the offseason ahead should be one of the more intriguing ones in recent memory. Do the Avs re-sign Brock Nelson? Will Martin Necas sign an extension this summer? What do you do with the depth defense? And the forwards. … Jonathan Drouin? Miles Wood? There’s a lot this team has to figure out.

With that being said, I floated the idea of doing player report cards to highlight the season that was for the permanent pieces of the lineup. I do want to do that. But I also want to open this up for discussion. I’m loaded with Avs roster ideas, historic knowledge, personal stories, and just a nerdy love for this game that I can write about this offseason.

So with that, what are you interested in reading? What kind of coverage would you like to see in the coming, weeks, months, and well into the offseason?

Share your ideas in the comments section, and let’s get excited for next season together. Dare I say … Is it October yet?

Game 3 — Toronto Maple Leafs at Florida Panthers: The Leafs nearly took complete control of the series, but the Panthers erased a two-goal deficit and won in OT after noted Leaf killer Brad Marchand got the game winner. Suddenly, a pivotal Game 4 will determine will the series will land before it heads back to Toronto for Game 5.

Game 2 — Dallas Stars at Winnipeg JetsAfter struggling to stop the puck in the first round against the St. Louis Blues, Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck has surrendered just three goals through two games of Round 2. Hellebuyck made 26 saves in Game 2, shutting out Rantanen and the Stars to send the series to Dallas knotted up at 1-1. The biggest test will be how the reigning Vezina Trophy winner plays on the road. He’s got two chances in Dallas to steal a game or two. For all the offensive weapons the Stars have, it’s only Rantanen’s second-period hat trick in Game 1 that has gone past Hellebuyck. Nobody else could solve him.

Tonight’s Schedule

  • Game 3: Washington Capitals at Carolina Hurricanes (4 pm MT on TNT & truTV)
  • Game 3: Vegas Golden Knights at Edmonton Oilers (7 pm MT on TNT & truTV)

Around The NHL

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Both Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby were named to the NHL’s quarter-century team. So far, we know Joe Sakic was also named.

Philly Hockey Now: Noah Cates could take the Flyers to arbitration after a solid breakout season. Should the team be worried?

New Jersey Hockey Now: We’ve got changes coming to the Devils coaching staff as Sheldon Keefe gets an opportunity to bring in his own guys.

NYI Hockey Now: Could… Lou Lamoriello not be leaving after all?

Vegas Hockey Now: No suspension for Nic Roy, who was kicked out of Game 2 in OT for probably the biggest brain fart of a play I’ve seen in years. Read more from the latest Knights Notebook ahead of a big Game 3 on the road.

The Avalanche’s general manager, accompanied by the President of Hockey Operations, will meet with the local media on Tuesday. Also, if you thought the Dallas Stars had a crazy comeback in Game 7, you should see what the Jets did to the Blues.

All that and more on this edition of Deen’s Daily — May 5.

Colorado Hockey Now

So many questions need to be answered. And most of them will be asked on Tuesday when Chris MacFarland and Joe Sakic meet with the media after a disappointing first-round exit. I wrote on Monday that MacFarland should lose his job for how the Mikko Rantanen saga unfolded, and I still stand by that.

When the Avs traded Rantanen to Carolina, I wrote that MacFarland deserves trust and patience to make his next moves. And how this all unfolds will determine his fate. The reality is, it unraveled, and the way the season ended should absolutely determine his fate. MacFarland did something that doesn’t happen in this league. He let go of a superstar talent — one of the best playoff performers in recent history — in the prime of his career, only for that player to end up back in the division with a team the Avs already struggle with.

You better have things work in your favor if you’re going to do that. They didn’t, and he should lose his job for it. Will he? Probably not, given that he’s going to address the media on Tuesday. But I still think it’s a fireable offense.

Also, Nathan MacKinnon is joining Sidney Crosby at the World Championships for Team Canada. Do your thing, Nate. You’ve probably tried before and failed. But it doesn’t mean you can’t try again.

On that note, I will write more this week about MacKinnon’s postgame comments from Saturday.

Stanley Cup Playoff Recap

Winnipeg Jets vs St. Louis Blues: The Jets trailed Game 7 by a score of 3-1 before pulling within a goal with 1:56 remaining. Then, they got the game-tying goal with 1.6 seconds left on the clock before winning late in double overtime to advance to the second round. What a spectacular comeback for a team (and a goalie) who needed a win in the biggest of ways. The Jets will face Dallas for the right to advance to the Western Conference Final.

Tonight’s Schedule

  • Game 1: Florida Panthers at Toronto Maple Leafs (6 pm MT on ESPN)

Around The NHL

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Marc-Andre Fleury is also joining Team Canada. He’ll play with Crosby one last time.

Montreal Hockey Now: What kind of contract extension will Lane Hutson get?

Florida Hockey Now: The Panthers didn’t need home-ice advantage in their series against Tampa. They won all three road games. They’re cool with starting on the road again in Toronto tonight.

San Jose Hockey Now: It’s Draft Lottery night! The league is adding a twist to this year’s event.

The Avalanche are in Dallas, and I’m here too. Hope you’re all ready for a (hopefully) long playoff run.

Catch my full Round 1 series preview here.

Also, Colleen Flynn put a lot of time into this piece on Jared Bednar and his season behind the bench. Give it a read and let her know what you think in the comments section.

Around The NHL

St. Louis Blues at Winnipeg Jets: The only other game tonight will take place right before the Avs and Stars drop the puck. The Jets are looking to rebound from their five-game series loss to Colorado last year while St. Louis is back in the playoffs for the first time since the Avs eliminated them in six games in 2022.

I will say, I’m excited to see Connor Hellebuyck and Jordan Binnington go up against each other after the 4 Nations Face-Off.

Jason Robertson: The Stars suffered a massive blow in their last regular-season game. Top-line left winger Jason Robertson suffered a knee injury and is out week-to-week. He won’t play in Game 1 tonight and probably won’t be seen for Games 2 or 3 either. It’s the playoffs, so we probably won’t get a clear picture of his status until the morning of each game.

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: The Pens postmortem you don’t want to miss. Also, Sidney Crosby talks about his regrets from the season.

Montreal Hockey Now: Top five storylines, X-factors from the Habs’ first-round series against the top seed in the Eastern Conference.

Florida Hockey Now: The Panthers and Lightning won’t kick off their series until Tuesday. Florida will play that game without one of its depth forwards, who was suspended for one game.

Ottawa Hockey Now: Preview the Battle of Ontario. Outside of the Avs and Stars, this series is my go-to and I couldn’t be more excited to watch these teams go at it. The last time they faced each in the postseason was in 2004. I was in fifth grade and lived in Toronto at the time. Watching that series was one of my favorite childhood hockey memories.

Vegas Hockey Now: Three Golden Knights who need to up their game in the postseason. Vegas is set to take on the Minnesota Wild in Round 1.
