Team Profile
SFR005 is a large design shift from Sheffield Formula Racing’s previous cars. Overall, we have focussed on producing a more tightly packaged car. This has been achieved through a number of key design features. Firstly, the engine has been downsized from a 4 cylinder Suzuki GSXR600 to the single cylinder Husqvarna. This produces both a weight saving and allows more torque to be applied in a more advantageous rev range. Secondly, the wheels have been reduced in size from 13” to 10”. This has driven numerous other design changes including inboard rear brakes. SFR005 has far more sensors than previous cars, which, via a Vehicle Data Acquisition System (VDAQ), allow numerous different variables, such as wheel speed and damper displacement to be recorded. This data can then be used to improve the design of future cars.

Sheffield Formula Racing consists of 35 engineering undergraduates, from across all four years of study at the University of Sheffield, for whom Formula Student is an entirely extra-curricular project. The team is organised into five different design teams, in addition to the leadership team. Our main focus this year has been to increase the amount of testing we complete with SFR005.
