Team Profile
2012 is the University of Iceland’s second year participating in the Formula Student competition. The experience gained at Silverstone 2011 and the trials and tribulations the team went through to get there has paid off manifold as the core group continues to lead the design process. Major improvements have been seen in the chassis design, drive train and the cars highly modular electrical system featuring a CAN-bus network and battery management system which are both student designed and manufactured. This year’s focus has been on incorporating sustainable materials into the design with special attention on basalt fibers, as basalt is a readily available resource on the volcanic island of Iceland. A slew of new recruits have been added to the roster this year as well as a partnership with the Icelandic Art Academy. The product and graphic designers from the Academy have reshaped the team’s image giving the 2012 car a sleek new look and rebranding the team which now bears the name Spark. Our goal for this year’s competition is to have a running car which competes in all of the dynamic events. It has been an amazing experience for everyone involved in bringing Formula Student to Iceland.
The body is designed by product designers from the Icelandic Art Academy. Spark is the first team ever to compete in FS from Iceland. Spark is a completely student created, student run and student promoted enterprise. Our work on basalt fiber has opened avenues to introduce the material through our sponsors into the shipbuilding as well as prosthetics and orthotics industry. There is one race track in Iceland, portions are not paved. The University of Iceland possesses a small lathe and drill, neither of which the team is allowed to use. We rely entirely on machine shops and manufacturing companies in Iceland.
