Team Profile:
For the fourth consecutive year Team Spark is representing
the University of Iceland at FSUK. With a well-managed and motivated team we
will be competing with a renewable and reliable high-end race car. Our current
design is lighter, more powerful and with a lower center of gravity than our
last Class 1 entry.
While focusing on renewability we used aluminium and alternative manufacturing
methods that have saved both time and residual material making the car more
ecological. We used aerospace aluminium in both the suspension and the
drivetrain. With a chrome-moly tubular space frame and a carbon fiber shell the
car is very stiff with a lightweight superstructure. Additionally, this year we
designed our own analysis methods using accelerometers and gyroscopes
distributed around the car gathering valuable data for both the kinematics and
force calculations.
The team consists of 34 engineering students from various departments. We are
proud of the fact that a quarter of our team is female, making the group
diverse and multidisciplinary.
Due to our location and economy both funding and logistics have been a big
part of the project. Having to adjust the design to our budget while aiming for
ecological production has been difficult but rewarding.
Additional information
1. This is the first time Team Spark drives in this competition.
2. We will be bringing electricity from Iceland, so the energy in the drive comes from 100% renewable sources.
3. Our drivers’ driving-trainer is an Icelandic former F3 driver.
4. In testing (and driving) the car has only used pure, 100% renewable energy
5.The Icelandic Minister of Industry and Commerce has an honorary title “Team Spark’s Girlfriend”.
6.Team Spark works closely with the prosthetics manufacturer Össur ehf, the drive shafts are made from prosthetic shinbones.
