Swansea University Race Engineering (SURE) is a multi-disciplinary team consisting of over 50 students from all backgrounds in engineering, science and business.
This year’s SURE race car, S17, has been designed with a focus on mechanical grip, weight and power delivery. To meet these targets the powertrain utilises a turbocharged Yamaha Genesis 80fi in conjunction with a continuously variable transmission (CVT), this allows them to continuously utilise maximum power whilst in the optimal gear ratio. S17 incorporates a split chassis design. The tub has been manufactured from a single piece of aluminium honeycomb ensuring reliability whilst minimising weight at a fraction of the cost of carbon fibre, whilst a steel tubular sub-frame allows efficient access to the engine and ancillaries.
