Cape Speed is a group of young, diverse and aspiring students from almost every faculty within Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) in Cape Town, South Africa. Cape Speed are returning for the third time to Formula Student, UK since being formed in 2011.
The Formula Student programme at CPUT was established under the mentorship of CPUT staff in the TIA Adaptronics AMTL research unit with the aim of developing automotive engineers in South Africa, and has since grown from strength to strength. Cape Speed currently consists of a well rounded team of technical, business and design students. The main objective for the team is to improve on the two previous results from 2012 and 2014. Additionally, the team aims to significantly reduce the weight and improve competitiveness of the vehicle from 2014 by improving design and manufacturing techniques. The 2016 car has a hybrid chassis (carbon front and steel tubular rear) compared to the 2014 vehicle, Prins, which has a carbon monocoque and Ibhubezi (2012), which has a steel tubular frame chassis. The latest vehicle has also migrated from 4-cylinder engines running on petrol previously to a single cylinder engine running E85, thereby reducing weight and improving fuel economy.
