Team profile
Cardiff Racing returns to Silverstone with their latest competition vehicle, CR10. The car was designed primarily by fourth year engineering students with enthusiastic volunteers ranging from first year undergraduates to postgraduates. Having had reliability issues in previous years the focus has been on building a solid car early in the year to maximise testing opportunities. With all our aims acheived, confidence is high and this year we are striving for our best result to date.
The chassis remains a half aluminium honeycomb sandwich panel monocoque, half steel spaceframe concept more refined than previous years’ designs with substantial mass reductions, improved manufacturability, increased accessibility and innovative design solutions.
An optimised intake and exhaust system allows the Aprilia SXV 550 V-twin to maintain previous power and torque, however deliver more reliable power with greater efficiency. A complete overhaul of the cooling system has incorporated a revised radiator and new sidepod. The power is transmitted via a student designed aluminium differential that has proved faster than a spool in back to back testing.
New suspension systems provide a modest mass reduction and improved geometry over previous vehicles. A solenoid quick shifter combined with gearbox modifications allows reliable and easy gear shifting.
