Team Profile
LUMotorsport, now in its 12th year; is a team of 20 highly passionate Automotive, Aeronautical, Mechanical and Electrical engineers from Loughborough University. LFS14 is an evolution of LUMotorsport’s all new car for 2013; bringing significant mass savings, large gains in powertrain performance and, for the first time in our team’s history, a wind-tunnel proven aerodynamic package.
Static twin element wings bring a modest amount of downforce, with excellent lift-to-drag and -mass ratios. A revolutionary two-stage air intake system, coupled with optimised valve timing look to bring 20% more torque to the rear wheels from our dependable stable of four cylinder Honda engines; kept cool by many hours of work in thermal management. The steel spaceframe has been optimised even further, with elegant rear end packaging.
All this is brought together in the team’s spare time, oftentimes throughout the night. Pride in our work is earned through meticulous attention to detail, and ownership of every stage of the design and build process. As much of the build as can be is kept on campus, and many elements are still made by hand. As ever, the team aspires to be the best in the UK – and this year it is more confident than ever.
Additional information
Reputedly the only car ever to enter a Formula Student event proudly wearing a dashing pink livery; and numerously heralded as both the loudest and ‘best sounding’ car here; LUMotorsport returns for 2014 with its loudest livery (and exhaust) to date. The team is consistently optimistic but rarely triumphant, fuelled by numerous oil drum barbecues and a popular brand of foot-long sandwich, with whom a sponsorship deal unfortunately fell through this year.
Development on the car was initially confined to aerodynamic aids and electrical updates; but quickly spread to the powertrain, driveline, suspension, chassis and just about every other component that really didn’t need to be changed; causing untold pressure and frustration.
Recent events have seen us perform well in straight line and autocross, only to fail the endurance with nothing but some mildly depressed team members and a pathetic excuse. Who knows if this year is going to be any better?
